This is called 'reverse mentorship' and another reason to be reminded that we are all students, and never above one another when it comes to life and career. So I am owning up to my mistake by offering a living wage for this opportunity and relaying it to my network.īut perhaps the biggest lesson out of this for me is the fact that my mentee actually mentored me and taught me a great life lesson I wouldn't have obtained had it not been for #mentorship. Given the current inflation and costs of living offering minimum wage would make what I did even more insensitive and ignorant. You dont have to spend one more sleepless night worrying over those life happens moments. That, and the fact and many students come out of university with student loans and in a vulnerable state trying to make a living. When you track transactions, you get in your budget all the time. One of my mentees who just finished university humbly wrote to me indicating that freshly graduated students from disadvantaged socio-economic backgrounds would not be able to afford a living and advance their careers on minimum wage. Recently I made the mistake of offering an internship opportunity at YLaw and advertised it while offering minimum wage.

Where Religious Identity Fits into Your DEI Strategy

I'm happy to speak about the specifics of the policy/procedure for anyone who would like to reach out. This was a fairly easy system to implement (although we are still learning about it at only 6 months in). Our policy simply demonstrates YLaws value for the cultural and religious identities of our team. Our policy has not impacted business needs at all as these days would normally be taken off anyway by individuals (thru PTO or unpaid time) due to their personal significance. YLaw, like many others, is an incredibly diverse workplace and Canada's stat holidays do not recognize this. Leena is always at the forefront of innovative business practices so I'm proud to say we implemented this in January 2023. Several months back I brought a proposal to Leena Yousefi about creating a policy allowing YLaw staff and Associates to swap provincial/federal stat holidays for religious and cultural holidays that are actually relevant to their personal identities.
